Elstree supports a wide range of charities through various activities during the school year. There is also a biennial Ridgeway Walk which raises funds for two chosen charities, usually local and child related.
This year the boys have chosen Glad’s House as the charity to support. Glad’s House provides support for street children in Mombasa. Their primary aim is to get as many children as possible repatriated with their families - when that is not possible, then they try to get the boys back into full time education. In October 2010 the Glad’s House under 13's football team, The Coastal Kings, visited the UK for a football tour, with matches against four Prep Schools. The fourteen young footballers and their coaches stayed at Elstree School for the first couple of days and then spent the weekend with host families in what was a "trip of a lifetime" for these youngsters. Two other charities that have enjoyed Elstree’s continued support over the past few years are Afghan Connection and PALS. The Afghan Connection, directed by Dr Sarah Fane, a current Elstree parent, raises funds for our “twin” school, the Ghazi Gul Ahmad School just outside the Kabul province of Afghanistan. Elstree pupils have already been able to contribute to the purchase of new equipment for the school, as well as exchanging correspondence, drawings, and other creative items with pupils in Afghanistan. PALS is a charity supporting children with specific physical disabilities and arranges for children to come to Elstree on some Saturday mornings and take part in activities with pupils from Year 7. This is done in conjunction with the Elstree Award scheme. It is a feature of an Elstree education that the boys look outwards to others and participation in projects for the benefit of others is encouraged. The children at Home Farm are encouraged to be helpful and caring members of the community and to develop an awareness of those less fortunate than themselves. In addition to the Afghan Connection, the children support Swings and Smiles, a charity based in Newbury. It is currently raising money to create a purpose built recreational centre for families of children with special needs. There is no such facility in the area and this is much needed to not only provide the children with suitable indoor and outdoor play equipment but it will also provide the families and carers with a meeting place where they can support each other. |
