Teachers are encouraged to assess the boys, to form judgments and to reflect upon their own teaching after every lesson. The boys are also more formally assessed at exeats, half-terms and at the ends of term. At exeats and half-terms, reports or "Orders" are given for both attainment and effort. These Orders are communicated to parents via a report card that is completed with a comment by the Form Tutor. Boys are awarded "Notable Orders" for particularly good efforts. At the end of every term, boys' parents receive a full written report from every subject including extras (musical instruments, etc.). The Headmaster also writes his own report on each boy every term. Reports are sent home with boys and their parents on the final day of term. Elstree also operates a behaviour monitoring system, using 'Stars' and 'Conduct Marks'. Boys can gain stars for good work. These are totalled weekly and count towards the termly house competition. A boy may be awarded a Distinction for exceptional work, which counts as three stars. Commendations are awarded for noteworthy acts of kindness or helpfulness around the School. They are worth two stars towards the House total.
