During the course of a term, the boys can expect to be invited to attend several lectures, delivered by visiting speakers from varied walks of life. Currently, these lectures are scheduled to take place in the McMullen Hall two or three times a term. Every effort is made to choose lecture topics that are appropriate for the particular age and interests of the boys.
It is intended that the lecture broadens the pupils’ perspective to consider topics that would not necessarily be raised in class, or to support a topic that has already been covered. By necessity, they are illustrated talks and provide time for questions.
Through these lectures, the boys will not only receive exposure to a broad sweep of topics and subjects but also as part of their wider education to learn how to sit quietly and listen attentively to a speaker. The speaker will also be introduced and thanked publicly by a member of the school.
Topics recently covered in lectures are shown below. Other talks are scheduled to include topics about falconry, radio controlled model aircraft, Mongolia, ancient Rome and the history of modern music.
