The main aim of the games programme is to provide every boy with the opportunity to challenge, develop and improve their skills and knowledge at the appropriate level. Whilst we attempt to give every boy the chance to represent the school during their time at Elstree, the main emphasis is on skill acquisition of the various activities that we provide. Every boy is timetabled at least five one hour sessions a week. Each term has a major sport whilst they also participate in cross-country, health & fitness and hockey throughout both the Lent and Summer Terms. Where possible the boys are grouped in their year group; however, there are some exceptions. If year groups are big, then they will be split by ability. In Years 7 and 8, the boys are grouped together and split into groups dependent on their ability also. As a result of our emphasis on skill acquisition, we aim to provide fixtures for the boys when they are at a competent level of ability. We try to find fixtures against other schools for as many boys as possible but there will be times where some boys will have more fixtures than others. Over the course of a year, Elstree provides over 200 opportunities for the boys to represent the school in a number of sports. Elstree will field teams in football, rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, athletics, squash, fencing, shooting, judo, basketball, badminton, swimming and cross country. We endeavour to challenge the boys to perform to their best and we are able to push some boys towards representative honours. Facilities include a well-equipped sports hall (marked for badminton, five a side football, tennis, basketball and volleyball), an outdoor heated swimming pool and a small all-weather pitch (marked for tennis, football and hockey). We also have excellent outdoor facilities including numerous pitches for the major sports, outdoor cricket net facilities, a fitness trail and a ropes course. |
